Automated Finite Element Methods
Cabot Design has developed applications within the ABAQUS/CAE framework which automate the generation, running, and post-processing of finite element models using generic RAMSAS format MS-Excel data. This captures accepted workflows and finite element analysis methodologies for deployment across the industry. Non-expert FEA users can then execute the analysis directly through simple data manipulation within MS-Excel. Currently in use for automated analysis of crash fuel pressure loads on several variants of aircraft wing spar fuel boundaries, including a representation of the ribs, skins and stringers. Additional work has been done in automating the generation of rib foot models to quantify the rotational fixity afforded by the structure local to the castellation foot. This has been conducted using the ABAQUS/CAE python scripting capability and Excel VBA code, along with Patran PCL code where necessary.
